Speech & Language Therapy

What is Speech and Language Therapy?
A Speech and Language Therapist works with individuals who have difficulties communicating.  This includes problems with comprehension (understanding of what is said) and expressive language (talking) and using communication to successfully interact with others.  A Speech and Language Therapist also supports parents and families and works closely with nurseries, schools and other professionals.

Assessment and Therapy
Speech and language therapy assessment and therapy sessions are usually conducted in your own home or in school (if contracted by school).  A thorough assessment of your child's needs is obtained through discussion and taking of a case history to discuss their speech and language development and other developmental milestones.  Assessment may include informally looking at your child's play, attention and listening skills and through assessment of their understanding and use of the spoken word using objects and pictures with more formal assessment completed dependent on a child's age and if required.
Following assessment, a block of therapy may be offered if it is felt that this would be beneficial to your child.  This is usually a regular weekly appointment for a block of 6-8 therapy sessions.  Home practice will also be encouraged and activities and recommendations provided to ensure your child's progress is maximised.
